About me
I am Gabriela Espinoza Vazquez. and I am originally from Cajeme, Sonora in Mexico. This is a remote desert like area where the rural and urban lives are not that far from each other and where the Yaqui indigenous peoples are our ethnic neighbours.
From an early age I fell in love with the arts. I blossomed playing folk music at the university. Cultural studies have always drawn me and I combined my musical disposition in many different contexts and platforms.
I obtained a Bachelor's degree in Visual Arts from the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo Leon, Northern Mexico and I became a professor of aesthetics, art history and art production administration at the Universidad de Sonora and of art history, drawing, gouache and acrylic's at the Universidad del Noroeste, northwest Mexico.
I am inquisitive and hands-on. This allowed me to start up the collective Paula Martins - Alfonso Rosas – Gabriela Espinoza in the city of Hermosillo, where my commitment to conducting research on the art story of the region emerged.
As an artist, I am multidisciplinary, working across different disciplines including music, the visual arts and different forms of art. I like to expand the creative possibilities of self and explore different mediums. In doing this I have also developed several musical acts: Flor mexica, Teca Sikiri, Tera Volts and Cielo Bocanegra (a.k.a. Ramon is gone)
I am in many ways a cultural promoter of the Latin-American heritage, I am also a composer, a singer, a teacher and a researcher. I am first and foremost a painter, but combine this with photography and other media.
I came to The Netherlands in 2004, raised a family and am now living in Kampen engaging in the local cultural scene. During the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown I gave concerts online and the online series continued taking the form of a Literair cafe for Spanish speakers. At the moment I am working with digital art and preparing my next production.
